A ransom for many is another commentary in the excellent Welwyn Commentary Series, written to explain books of the Bible in a simple, well-applied and faithful way. This one is on Mark’s Gospel.

It was written by Dr Steve Wilmshurst, who is director of training at Kensington Baptist Church in Bristol. It is well written and easy to read, having been compiled from a series of sermons preached at Kensington Baptist Church.

There are plenty of engaging verbal illustrations and the applications are well made and challenging. Dr Wilmshurst keeps a wise eye on the overall structure and message of Mark, so we don’t feel lost at any point.

Where there are difficult areas in the text, he deals with them well and fairly without ducking the issues. He does have a way of retelling the accounts with a freshness that makes the book a pleasure to read.

This is a welcome addition to other commentaries on Mark’s Gospel. It works well as a stimulus for those producing sermons or talks on Mark, and as a devotional book to be read alongside this great Gospel.
