Crazy love — overwhelmed by a relentless God

Crazy love is a book designed to challenge Christians to stop living a lukewarm life, and encourage them to live a life ‘worthy of the calling you have received’ (Ephesians 4:1).

It consists of eleven chapters, each chapter divided by subheadings, to help guide focus.

Each chapter is a mix of biblical extracts, paired with teaching and anecdotal accounts from Chan’s own experiences. The tone of Crazy love is quite conversational, and while some readers may prefer this, I personally found it a struggle to fully engage with this writing style at times.

The main theme of the book is God’s love for his people, and how Christians should respond to this in the way they live their lives.

Yet, despite Chan’s frequent references to God’s love, oddly, he does not focus much on Jesus’ death and resurrection, the ultimate outpouring of God’s love: ‘For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life’ (John 3:16).

This omission to remind readers that we are saved through Christ, and instead an emphasis on loving God and others in practical ways could falsely give the impression that salvation is works-based. I found certain parts of Crazy love interesting and helpful, but in other places I thought it somewhat lacking.
