Why do we have two services on a Sunday? I thought it was meant to be a day of rest!
You may be confusing rest with inactivity. On this day we put aside the ordinary demands and duties of the other six days, giving ourselves to the pursuit and enjoyment of communion with God. When the Lord ceased from his work of creation, he went on sustaining and communing with his creation. Adam’s first full day was for worship and communion with his Creator.
We find our spiritual rest and refreshment not just in stopping what legitimately takes up our time and energy on the other days, but in seeking the face of God. That does not mean it is wrong to take a nap on Sunday afternoon, but think in terms of making the most of your opportunities to draw near to God. Recall that the fourth commandment begins with a positive requirement to work for six days – you have all of those for your other duties, and this one for the Lord.
