Egyptian referendum

Demonstrators who led the revolution in Egypt have been left disappointed by the results of the latest referendum on suggested changes to the constitution.
According to reports, Egyptians turned up in droves to vote; 78 per cent said ‘yes’ to see elections to parliament, senate and the presidency taking place in the near future. The majority of these votes came from right-wing Islamic groups.
The 22 per cent who voted ‘no’ were hoping to delay voting to allow time for the formation of new political parties and a better political infrastructure.
Reports from local Christian groups said that 18 million people voted and four million of these said ‘no’. Of these four million, probably about half were Christians.
