EU: First anniversary of ‘digital surveillance’ laws which threaten free speech

It has been one year since the European Union enacted the Digital Services Act, nicknamed by free speech campaigners as the ‘Digital Surveillance Act’. 

The law came into force in February 2024, and the European Commission says it is needed to tackle ‘misinformation’ and ‘hate speech’ online.

But religious liberty agency ADF International says the legislation is fraught with overreach, ambiguity, and the erosion of fundamental freedoms.

Dr Adina Portaru is Senior Counsel for Europe at ADF International. She said, ‘By mandating the removal of broadly defined “harmful” content, this legislation sets the stage for widespread censorship, curtailing lawful and truthful speech under the guise of compliance and safety.
