Golden year for Bala
The Evangelical Movement of Wales conference centre, set within beautiful surroundings in Bala, North Wales, celebrates its golden anniversary this year.
The Movement first owned Eryl Aran, the property next door; and summer camps began there in the 1950s. However, it was soon evident that Eryl Aran was not large enough, and so, after much prayer, Bryn-y-groes was purchased in 1960.
Mrs Johnston, the then owner of Bryn-y-groes, who was selling the house, was approached by Rev. Gwilym Humphries. She was willing to sell to the Movement rather than achieve a more lucrative deal with Liverpool Corporation or Trawsfynydd Nuclear Authority, who were also interested in the property.
So began God’s work at Bryn-y-groes. Regular camps for children and young people, along with ministers’ conferences, began to take place. Now, we receive many groups from all over the country and some from abroad. If buildings could talk, who knows what stories could be told of the works of grace in changed lives?
Many improvements and various extensions have taken place over the years, from cold rooms, damp mattresses and open fires, to the comforts of modern living.
Lives changed
More recent improvements have been a large games hall and upgrades to the downstairs bedroom to provide a wet room for disabled guests.
We believe that all this has come about by God’s grace, and the vision and commitment of many down through the years.
We are so thankful to God for all done here during the past 50 years. As well as the camps and ministers’ conferences, we have welcomed many church house-parties, student groups, family gatherings, retreats, day conferences, wedding receptions and holiday groups.
Many people have been touched by God while spending time here, and have put their trust in Christ as Lord and Saviour. Many of God’s people have been encouraged through faithful ministry.
My own experience of Bryn-y-groes began with attending day conferences. I then went on to serving on camps, and finally have had the privilege of managing Bryn-y-groes with my wife.
Because we want to give all the glory to God, we are planning a celebration and thanksgiving day on 25 September, commencing with a buffet lunch at noon. We would love to welcome past guests to join us on that day. Further details: conferencecentre@emw.org.uk
