The Prime Minister, Sir Keir Starmer, has – eventually – rejected calls from a Muslim MP to introduce Islamic blasphemy laws in the UK.

Tahir Ali MP (Labour, Birmingham Hall Green and Moseley) asked, ‘Will the Prime Minister commit to introducing measures to prohibit the desecration of all religious texts and the prophets of the Abrahamic religions?’

The wording of the question is similar to a proposal for an international blasphemy law recently put forward by Pakistan to a UN forum. In Pakistan, laws on blasphemy can carry death sentences.
