Bakewell outreach
The 179th Bakewell Show was held from 5-6 August in a picturesque setting in the Peak District of Derbyshire, and drew an estimated crowd of 65,000.
For the past 30 years there has been a distinct Christian witness at this event, ever since believers from the Bakewell Gospel Hall first had the vision of reaching visitors to the show with the gospel. In recent years, Stanton Lees Chapel, together with other Christians desiring to reach the lost, have been involved.
People were offered refreshments and free Christian literature in a marquee. It is estimated that more than 800 people came in. Many conversations took place, often not progressing much beyond exchanging pleasantries, but each was concluded by asking the people to take away a gospel tract or Open Air Mission CD.
However, many serious discussions about the claims of Jesus Christ did take place; and one person in particular broke down in tears and asked for prayer.
An ingenious ‘fishing’ game and quiz attracted children to a table where postal Bible courses were offered. A book store complemented the occasion.
The opinion of all involved was that the outreach had not only been fully enjoyable but an effective medium for presenting God’s remedy for sin, in the Lord Jesus Christ. We continue to look to the Lord to bless this work, conscious that while we sow, he alone gives the increase.
