Cromer Baptist Church
It was a special day in the life of Cromer Baptist Church when about 150 gathered on Saturday 8 November to witness the induction of Jon Davies as pastor. The service was attended by representatives from local churches, the town mayor, and friends from a wide area.
Cromer Baptist had been without a pastor since March 2007, following the death of Howard Spencer who faithfully served for 15 years. Some present at the induction had assisted the fellowship through the interregnum in preaching and eldership input.
Following a career in teaching, Jon Davies became co-pastor at Sudbury Grace Baptist Church and completed a theological studies course with WEST. The church at Cromer became increasingly aware of God’s leading as they got to know Jon and his wife Lisa and greatly benefited from Jon’s ministry. This resulted in a unanimous call being made and a strong assurance to pastor and people that this was the answer to their prayers.
Pastor David Ellis (Stowmarket) chaired the service and conducted the induction, with retired pastor James Wood leading in prayer. Pastor Barry Moult (Sudbury) gave the charge to the church, drawing attention to the early church in the book of Acts – how they loved God, his Word, one another, and the lost.
Pastor Hugh Collier brought a charge to Jon Davies from Ezra 7:10. He emphasised that before Ezra taught the Word of God or applied it to anyone else, he first had to apply it to himself.
In response Jon confirmed his call to be a preacher and under-shepherd, who would teach the whole counsel of God. Pastor Jonathan Wood (Whittlesey) preached on Romans 10:15: ‘How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the gospel…’ The preacher is sent with a divine commission. His message should be clear for all to understand and he should be treated with gratitude and respect.
The service was followed by a buffet tea and fellowship together.
