Google and China

Christian charity Release International is calling on Microsoft and Yahoo to refuse to censor the Internet – along with reports of persecution – in China.

This follows reports of Google’s new stance against the Chinese government, in response to the apparent hacking of its servers to access information about Chinese dissidents.

Google, criticised in the past for agreeing to censor certain key words given to it by the Chinese government, announced in January that: ‘We are no longer willing to continue censoring our results on Google.cn, and so over the next few weeks we will be discussing with the Chinese government the basis on which we could operate an unfiltered search engine within the law’.
