The percentage of women who binge drink has doubled since the 1990s, with 15 per cent of women now bingeing on alcohol each week.
Research by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation and Oxford Brookes University found that average alcohol consumption had risen for both men and women since the mid-1990s.
The studies suggested weekly intakes for men now stands at between 18 and 19 alcohol units, up from 15-16; and for women it was 9-10, up from 6-7. The researchers said the rise in female drinking was probably linked to greater financial security and the influence of advertising.
Men aged 45-64 were the biggest drinkers, consuming over 20 units a week on average. Men who binge drink at least once a week had risen to 23 per cent, up from 22 per cent in 1998.
