Threat to democracy
A new threat to freedom of speech and democracy is being posed by secularism, according to a report from Christian think-tank, the Jubilee Centre.
The report, called Sustaining Democracy, claims that basic human rights and civil liberties, such as the ability to believe and express one’s faith, are at risk from rising secularism.
Dr Philip Sampson, the author of the report, said that secularism has filled a ‘religious gap’ and become, in effect, a new religion that threatens to exclude all others. He explained: ‘If a view differs from the secular consensus, it is “ill-considered” and “prejudiced”, and should not be entertained. Where would this have left the abolitionists or the civil rights movement?’
