Uganda disaster

Severe landslides in eastern Uganda have killed hundreds of people and wiped out entire villages. During heavy rainfall, villagers feared for their livelihoods as muddy waters started to engulf their homes. They sought refuge in churches, hospitals and schools, but these were to become mass graves for many people.

In a winter marked for a spate of natural disasters, such as the earthquakes in Haiti and Chile, severe cold in Europe and rains across India and Africa, this latest disaster has strained already over-worked aid agencies.

Rescuers in this remote corner of Uganda, such as the Uganda Red Cross, had to use hand tools to dig through the layers of mud that engulfed a hospital and buried worshippers alive as they prayed in a church.
