A former-doctor-turned-inventor has called on the Republic of Ireland to follow Switzerland’s so-called ‘rights-based’ model to allow people to carry out assisted suicide.
Philip Nitschke, dubbed ‘Dr Death’ by the media, has boasted that he performed the world’s first assisted suicide using lethal injection.
He told the Oireachtas Joint Committee on Assisted Dying that it should permit any method of assisted suicide for anyone who has mental capacity.
He also suggested to the committee that Ireland should allow people to use his DIY ‘death pods’ for assisted suicide.
Nitschke’s pods reduce the oxygen level inside the capsule by flooding it with nitrogen gas until the occupant is dead.
