Given Tim Keller’s excellent evangelistic book, The Prodigal God, you might be wondering whether there is need for another book-length treatment of Jesus’s story of the ‘Prodigal Son’. Well, there is! Peter Williams’s short book deftly shows the brilliance of Jesus’s parable: both the artistry of the story and its many ‘riffs’ on the book of Genesis.
If you’ve read his earlier book, Can We Trust the Gospels, you’ll know how skilfully Dr Williams combines scholarly rigour with readability – a sadly rare combination. This ability is very much on display in his new book: I would dare any pastor or mature Christian to read it and say they haven’t learned something new (I certainly did).
